Memorial Day and the Ultimate Sacrifice

Memorial Day is an all-American day -- a day for family gatherings, picnics and the opening of the summer vacation season.  But it's also a day with the most serious of backdrops, when the nation pays tribute to the millions of men and women who gave their lives so that we could live freely.

We take time to honor our fellow citizens who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation – sacrifices that continue to be made in 2016.

Millions of Americans fought and died for our freedom and liberty.  Let us remember their sacrifices not just on this special day but all year long.

Free Heel Scan/Bone Density Screening June 9

On June 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., I will be hosting a FREE Heel Scan/Bone Density Screening at my Pen Argyl Office (2 N. Robinson Avenue, Pen Argyl) in partnership with Easton Hospital.

This screening is an important step in recognizing the warning signs for osteoporosis and is recommended for women over 65, men over 70, or anyone who has broken a bone after age 50. To make an appointment, please call my office at 610-863-1200.

Civil Air Patrol cadets of Braden Squadron 807

Senator ScavelloSenator Scavello

This week, I had the privilege of meeting with Civil Air Patrol cadets of Braden Squadron 807 in Bangor and taking part in their awards ceremony. The leadership, discipline and work ethic of these young men and women are outstanding.

Senator Scavello

It was my particular honor to present Cadet Second Lieutenant Nathaniel Peterson with the General Billy Mitchell Award, the second milestone in the cadet program. To earn the Billy Mitchell Award, Cadet Peterson demonstrated his skills and knowledge by passing comprehensive exams on leadership theory and aerospace topics. He also completed the Cadet Physical Fitness Test and met many other specific leadership requirements. Only 15 percent of Civil Air Patrol cadets will obtain the General Billy Mitchell Award.

I want to extend my sincerest well wishes and congratulations to Cadet Peterson as he continues to progress through his rank, develop new leadership abilities and further his education.

Observing the Passing of Northampton County Firefighters

It was my privilege to join Senator Lisa Boscola at our Fireman's Memorial Service last weekend to honor the lives of 23 firefighters who passed in Northampton County.

The firefighters we honored all gave much of their time and resources to ensure the safety of our communities and we owe them a debt of gratitude.  It is no exaggeration to say that there are many alive today because of the willingness of these firemen to give their all, putting their own lives on the line night and day, to rescue those in danger and preserve our neighborhoods. Thank you to all who have served and continue to serve.

I recently took part in Hanover Township's 5th Annual Armed Forces Day, honoring our nation's military. Thank you to those who contributed to this humbling event and to all those who have served.

Congratulations Students

Senator Scavello

Congratulations to the students from Bangor, Pen Argyl, and Faith Christian who were recognized this week for their outstanding academic achievements. Best wishes to all of you as you continue on to successful careers!

Sunday: Free Day of Fishing across PA

Families and friends visiting Pennsylvania’s popular outdoor spots over the Memorial Day holiday weekend can enjoy a day of free fishing.

Sunday, May 29 marks the first of two free fishing days in the Commonwealth offered by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The second is Independence Day – Monday, July 4.  All other fishing regulations still apply.  http://www.fishandboat.com/fishforfree.htm

PA Fish and Boat Commission wants your Feedback

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has created a new webpage to submit questions and opinions about the Commission, fishing and boating, and the Commonwealth’s aquatic resources.

Known as “The Fishing Hole,” the new webpage invites the public to share their thoughts on topics such as Fishing/Stocking, Fishing Regulations, Boat Registration/Titling, Boating and Access Areas and more.
