Wishing You and Your Family a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving!

We have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season. From my family to yours, we wish you the warmest greetings and blessings as you enjoy your time with family. May we make every day a day of Thanksgiving.

Monroe County Drought Warning

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued a drought warning for Monroe County. Please visit www.bcrawater.com for more information.

NJ Gov. Christie Keeps Tax Reciprocity Intact

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has reversed his decision to end the reciprocal tax agreement between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This agreement is critical to PA residents who commute to work in NJ and allows individuals to pay the tax rate of their home state. Thank you Governor Christie for keeping this agreement intact to protect commuting workers in both PA and NJ.

November Episode of Legislative Report

November 2016 - Mental Health & Drug/Alcohol Abuse

In my November episode of Legislative Report, I interview Jamie Drake, Administrator at the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission, Tiffany Rossanese, Administrator at the Northampton County Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, and John Christy, Monroe County Commissioner. We discuss the growing epidemic of opioid abuse and overdoses as well as the programs and resources available to anyone with family or friends suffering from addiction. Since January 2015 (when I was sworn-in as Senator), more than 180 confirmed fatal overdoses occurred within Monroe and Northampton Counties. There is an immediate need for action in Pennsylvania.

Special Edition of Legislative Report

Special Edition - Integra Home Counseling

On this Special Edition of Legislative Report, I interview Linda Gerkensmeyer, Executive Director of Integra Home Counseling, and State Representative David Parker regarding the importance of consumer awareness and knowledge when buying a home as well as the state of our housing market in Monroe County. Linda and her organization help families facing foreclosure and guide homeowners through the mortgage modification and refinancing process. Between January 2013 and January 2016, more than 4,295 new foreclosures were filed in Monroe County.

Upcoming Road Work

Senator Scavello

As construction crews continue road work throughout Pennsylvania, drivers in Monroe and Northampton Counties should consider subscribing to updates from PennDOT District 5. These updates include temporary road delays due to repaving, shoulder repair, crack sealing and much more. Upcoming PennDOT road work schedules for this week in Northampton and Monroe Counties are available. Act 89 projects, such as planned bridge replacements and road reconstruction can be found on the PennDOT projects website.

Pipeline Investment Program State Grants

Businesses, schools, hospitals and local governments can apply for state funds to gain access to a nearby natural gas pipeline. The Pipeline Investment Program (PIPE) provides grants to construct the last few miles of natural gas distribution lines to business parks, existing manufacturing and industrial enterprises, which will result in the creation of new jobs while providing access to natural gas for residents. Around the 40th District

Pocono Township Bicentennial

I was pleased to join so many wonderful people at Mountain View Park to celebrate the Pocono Township Bicentennial with the grand opening of the new Pocono Heritage Center. Despite the cold and snowfall, the event was a great success.

The Bicentennial Committee, under the strong leadership of Charlie Lynn Trapasso, organized the work of dozens of volunteers to display local history and provide community meeting space for area residents. Thank you to all who contributed and please take a moment to check out the new Heritage Center.

Meeting with Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors®

This week I had the opportunity to meet with the members of the Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors® Government Affairs Committee. It was a very informative hearing with firsthand accounts of issues affecting the regional and state real estate industry. Thank you to all of the members for hosting me and sharing your insights.

Our Newest Eagle Scout

Congratulations to our newest Eagle Scout Matthew Bright of Troop 41. I am pleased to recognize your achievement. An Eagle Scout later in life does not say, "I was an Eagle Scout" but shall say "I am an Eagle Scout," for the values and experiences learned along the way will continue to help in your future successes.

Northampton County 4-H Achievement Banquet

A special congratulations to all of the members of Northampton County 4-H on all of their accomplishments from this past year. The skills these boys and girls are learning through 4-H are critical to preserving a rich agricultural heritage in the Commonwealth and developing many life skills that will shape them into future leaders. I look forward to seeing many of you and your exhibits at this year’s PA Farm Show in January!

South Philly Pretzel of Bethlehem Celebrates Grand Opening

It was a pleasure to join Senator Lisa Boscola in honoring South Philly Pretzel as they celebrate their grand opening in Downtown Historic Bethlehem. Thank you for your commitment to the local community and local economy.

Installation of DECA Officers and New Members at MCTI

This past week we recognized officers and new members of DECA at the Monroe Career and Technical Institute’s (MCTI) annual Installation Luncheon. These young men and women have already shown their impressive leadership qualities and we look forward to seeing all the things you will continue to accomplish.
