December Episode of Legislative Report

December 2016 - Summit School of the Poconos

In my December episode of Legislative Report, I interview Nicole Elwood and Jennifer Olson and tour the Summit School of the Poconos, a new private school in Monroe County with a project-based curriculum known as STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. The Summit believes learning is not only measured by the knowledge an individual possesses, but by a capability to apply it, and the learning process should be valued as much as the results.

PennDOT Vehicle Registration Stickers

Beginning December 31, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will no longer issue vehicle registration stickers. While stickers will no longer be required, you will still need to renew your vehicle registration annually and present the card when requested by police and at safety inspections. Police will be able to verify registration electronically. Eliminating the stickers is expected to save taxpayers more than $1 million each year. Learn more here.

LIHEAP Applications Open to Eligible Residents

Pennsylvania’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is taking applications through March 31, 2017 for home heating assistance to qualifying low- and fixed-income individuals and families, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services.

Income eligibility for heating assistance for a household of one is $17,820, increasing incrementally with a family of ten’s income eligibility set at $73,815. Each additional person over ten raises the limit by $6,240.

Please contact my office if you need assistance completing an application. All required documents should be brought with you in order to verify accurate information. You can also apply online or download an application through COMPASS, Pennsylvania’s secure website for many health and human service programs. Learn more here.

Read Across Monroe

I will be collecting books in my Tannersville District office for Read Across Monroe. Please donate new or gently used books for children age 12 and younger at 2989 Route 611, Suite 103, Tannersville, PA 18372. More than 5,000 books have already been collected, but your donation will truly help many children.

Street 2 Feet Fundraiser

Senator Scavello

Please join me on December 10 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. when Street 2 Feet will be hosting a benefit fundraiser at Original Pocono Pub in Bartonsville. Street 2 Feet provides services to the homeless and those at risk of homelessness within Monroe County

Deer Hunting Season Underway

In most parts of the state, December 3 marked the beginning of antlerless deer hunting during the firearms deer season. Antlerless deer hunting opened in five Wildlife Management Units on Nov. 28, and the concurrent hunting of antlered and antlerless deer is permitted in those WMUs for the duration of the firearms deer season. For a complete breakdown of antler restrictions, Disease Management Area boundaries and other regulations, consult the 2016-17 Pennsylvania Hunting & Trapping Digest. Learn more here.

PennDOT Multimodal Grants

The deadline to submit applications for funding through the 2017-18 PennDOT Multimodal Transportation Fund is December 16, 2016. The Department expects to announce grant recipients in July 2017. For more information about the program, please visit here.
