Upper Mount Bethel – State Representative Joe Emrick and State Senator Mario Scavello announced today the approval of $3 million in capital budget funding for the rehabilitation of the Minsi Lake dam in Northampton County.
The Minsi Lake dam is classified as a “High Hazard Unsafe” dam by the PA Code, where significant infrastructure damage and loss of life are likely if an uncontrolled breach were to occur. As a high hazard dam with limited spillway capacity and significant structural issues, Minsi Lake was placed on the PA Fish and Boat Commission’s (PFBC) top priority list of dams for rehabilitation.
“Minsi Lake is a critical asset to my district, both for those who live near the lake and those who recreate there,” said Rep. Emrick. “I am pleased that Governor Wolf has agreed to release the funds necessary to replace this high hazard dam and preserve the lake for future generations.”
“As Chair of the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee, I was pleased to partner with Rep. Emrick and the PA Fish and Boat Commission to ensure the concerns with Lake Minsi were addressed,” said Senator Scavello. “Lake Minsi is vital to our districts and the release of the capital budget monies for this project eases significant concerns expressed by many of our constituents. The rehabilitation of the dam is of great benefit to area anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts.”
Work on the dam is expected to commence in 2017 and PFBC will host public meetings prior to any activity occurring at Lake Minsi. Schnabel Engineering is the consulting engineer for the rehabilitation project. Design has been completed and permits are currently being reviewed.
Minsi Lake is a 115 acre lake fed by the East Branch of Martins Creek. The primary function of the lake is for recreation, namely fishing and boating.
