Scavello Secures State Grants for Parks in Monroe, Northampton Counties

HARRISBURG – State Sen. Mario Scavello (R-40) today announced the approval of state funding he sought for parks projects in Monroe and Northampton counties.

Pocono Township will receive $125,000 for the construction of a splash pad – or water spray play area – at TLC Park.

The township will construct a 50-foot by-50-foot splash pad with animal-shaped sprayers, a “sneaky soaker” with five small buckets, and 11 ground sprayers. The splash pad will support a water recirculation tank system which will include a chlorine feeder system used to sanitize the water. The total project cost is $452,735.

“I am proud to be able to help bring the first splash pad to a park in Monroe County,” said Scavello. “I believe it is critical for legislators to use their elected position to bring tax dollars back to our communities. This grant will bring a nice upgrade to TLC Park.”

Lower Nazareth Township will receive $120,000 to assist with the construction of a splash pad in Newburg Community Park. The project will include installation of a 71-foot-by-75-foot splash pad, a 500-square-foot maintenance building, fencing, a 20-foot-by-40-foot pavilion, ADA-compliant paths, benches and trees. The project will bring a unique water feature to the community park that will offer recreational opportunity to serve people of all ages and abilities. The total project cost is $644,172.

“I worked hard to secure this grant for Lower Nazareth because township residents and citizens across the 40th District need an advocate in Harrisburg, and that’s what I’ve been for many years,” Scavello said. “I will continue to be the voice of township residents in the General Assembly until my term concludes at the end of the year.”

The grants were awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority under its Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program. The program is funded through the state Impact Fee, which is paid by the state’s unconventional natural gas producers.
