In Case You Missed It: School Property Tax Elimination Update

I recently provided a thorough update on the number one issue in our region: school property tax elimination. You can read it here.

PA Health Insurance Exchange Bill Signed into Law

Legislation creating an authority to operate a state-based health insurance exchange for Affordable Care Act individual market plans was signed into law on Tuesday.

The new law will also permit the Commonwealth to apply for a waiver to create a reinsurance program to drive down premium increases in the individual market. The federal government has provided greater flexibility and opportunities for states through such waivers. The bill was approved June 24 by the Senate Baking and Insurance Committee which I chair. I believe this will result in better insurance premiums for Pennsylvanians. The Commonwealth is taking the lead on this vital issue rather than depend on the federal government.

Fish for Free on July 4th

July 4th is the PA Fish and Boat Commission’s 2nd “Fish for Free Day” of the year.

Resident and non-residents can legally fish on Pennsylvania waterways without a fishing license or Trout/Salmon/Lake Erie permits. All other fishing regulations still apply.

PA Bicycle Routes Map

Pennsylvania has thousands of miles of safe, accessible bicycle routes, and the PennDOT Bike Route Map shows you where they’re at, including traffic volume, speed limits and elevation.  Be sure to use the Layers Icon to access the map’s data.

Around the 40th District

Last Friday, the ribbon was cut on the Oasis Community Center in Hanover Township. This center is the dream of the Miller family who tragically lost their son Ben as a result of Substance Use Disorder in 2016. This courageous family turned their personal tragedy into the non-profit Speak Up for Ben and now Oasis.

Located at the beautiful, historic 1803 Farmhouse at 3410 Bath Pike in Bethlehem, OASIS seeks to serve families who have experienced substance related loss and for those currently dealing with a loved one’s substance use by offering resources, support, and holistic healing activities. Their devoted team of board members and part-time volunteers, are committed to helping families facing the grief of a loved one’s substance use and/or overdose death.

Visit for more information. Thank you to Rhonda, Jerry, and Alex Miller and the entire team at Oasis for all tremendous work you are doing in our community. Thank you for taking on this mission for our community.
