Suicide Prevention Month

When it comes to suicide prevention, friends, co-workers & family members can be the one to save a life.

Here are five action steps for communicating with someone who may be suicidal, supported by evidence in the field of suicide prevention, from the National Suicide Prevention Hotline (1-800-273-TALK).

State Grants Available

Applications are being accepted through the end of September for two DCNR grant programs.

One is to help landowners plant trees along streams and riverbanks to help filter runoff and reduce erosion. The other supports ATV trail development, maintenance, equipment, etc. ATV grants are funded by ATV registration fees.

You can find more information and applications here.

State Police Accepting Horse Donations

The PA State Police is asking the community for donations of horses to support its 28-horse mounted patrol unit in Hershey.

The unit is deployed for searches, crowd control, community events and more. Must be geldings age 5-15, 16-18 hands tall.  Draft and draft-crosses are the preferred breed. To arrange a donation or for more information, contact Corporal Carrie Neidigh at 717-533-3463 or

Around the 40th District

On Wednesday, a number of local officials, community members and business representatives gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Middle Smithfield Community & Cultural Center and Library of the Smithfields at Echo Lake Park. This new facility will serve as a place for the community to gather, to learn and to appreciate the rich history of our region. During times of distress, the facility will also serve as an American Red Cross shelter. I’m pleased to see this project move forward and to support grant funds that will assist in its construction.

Earlier this week Secretary of Aging Robert Torres and I toured the new Senior Life Lehigh Valley facility in Hanover Township. The Secretary was impressed with Senior Life’s innovative approach to senior care which partners with members, family, and the community to enable members to remain at home while preserving dignity and autonomy.

Tuesday I had the opportunity to speak with members of the Monroe County Bar Association regarding a number of state issues affecting the judicial system and mental health. Thank you for having me and taking the time to share your concerns and questions with me. I will continue to advocate for our region and needs in Harrisburg.

Congratulations to Wee Wons Day Care Center & Preschool in Pocono Pines, which is celebrating 31 years of operation. I joined Representative Rader last week to present them with a citation in recognition of the anniversary.
