Governor Releases Funding for Minsi Lake Dam
After many meetings in Harrisburg with the PA Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) and the Wolf Administration, State Rep. Joe Emrick and I are pleased to announce that Governor Wolf is releasing $3 million in capital budget funding for the rehabilitation of Minsi Lake in Northampton County. We are pleased that Governor Wolf has listened to those who live near and recreate at Minsi Lake and at his positive response to concerns expressed by Rep. Emrick and myself urging him to release the funds necessary to preserve this vital lake in our respective districts.
The Minsi Lake dam was constructed in 1970 and consists of a 3,300-ft long earthen embankment with an outlet structure that allows for continual flow downstream, and a concrete secondary spillway. At an average expectancy of 50 years for a dam, the structure has reached its useful life.
The facility is classified as a “High Hazard Unsafe” dam by the PA Code, as significant infrastructure and loss of life are likely if an uncontrolled breach were to occur. The dam is classified as unsafe due to its limited spillway capacity and other seepage issues. As a high hazard dam, Minsi Lake was placed on the top priority list of dams PFBC is working to rehabilitate.
Schnabel Engineering is the consulting engineer for the rehabilitation project. The design has been completed and permits are being reviewed.
Work is expected to commence in 2017. A public meeting will be held by the PFBC prior to any activity.
Minsi Lake is a 115 acre lake fed by the East Branch of Martins Creek. The primary function of the facility is for recreation, namely fishing and boating.
