Student government seminar features over 75 students from Monroe and Northampton Counties
Local students discussed a wide range of state issues during Senator Mario M. Scavello’s (R-Monroe/Northampton) annual Senator for a Day student government seminar at Northampton Community College’s Monroe Campus on Friday, October 23.
The program invited students to learn about the legislative process and to introduce students to how the role as Senator shapes law and policy. As Senators, students divided into committees and debated numerous proposals:
SB1 Monitoring of Employee Work Email, Telephone and Internet Use
SB2 Elimination of the Death Penalty in Pennsylvania
SB3 Creation of Sales Tax on Food and Clothing
SB4 Taxing Soft Drinks to Fund Health and Physical Education Programs
SB5 Graduation Test Requirements
SB6 Possession of Electronic Devices Prohibited
SB7 Cell Phone Legislation
SB8 Seat Belt Legislation
- Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure
SB9 Privatization of State Owned Liquor Stores
SB10 Creating a ‘Do Not Spam’ List, Preventing Unwanted Emails
Students from several local schools participated in the event: Faith Christian, East Stroudsburg North and South, Pocono Mountain East and West, and several homeschool students.
